Hello future crocheter!
Hope you read previous post (find it here) and you already have perfect yarn and a suitable hook. Maybe you watched some YouTube tutorials and that’s great because you have the picture about crocheting.
In this post I’ll show you how to make a slip knot, chains and single crochet. With that knowledge you can make simple headband.
This pattern is free on this blog but if you want to have PDF version you can download it here on Craftsy for 1$.
Take the yarn and the hook and let’s dive in!
For this pattern I used this yarn http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/deltex-oscar and 3,5 mm hook. Do not worry if you have different yarn or a hook. It’s okay if you have bit thinner or thicker wool, or bit thinner or thicker hook.
How to make slip knot?
Put the yarn on your palm and hold it with your thumb (pic.1.). Then wrap it around your hand and make a cross with the yarn (pic2.). Put your thumb on the cross and hold (pic.3.).
Insert the hook under the first thread and catch other thread with the hook and pull back (pic. 4.-5.). Gently pull out your hand and hold one loop on your hook. Take free yarn and pull to tighten the loop (pic. 6.). The loop on the hook should be firm, but loose enough to slide back and forth easily on the hook (pic.7.).
And you just made your first slip knot!
Let’s make chains!
In the schematic view, the chains are shown as small circles ( oooooooooo).
You may have your own style to hold the yarn and the hook but this is my way of doing it and you’re free to use your own style.
I wrap yarn around my index finger on my left hand and with thumb and middle finger I hold the project or in this case shorter thread (pic.7.).
Now make yarn over (yo) the hook (from back to front) and draw working yarn through the loop of the slip knot on the hook and up onto the working area of the crochet hook (pic.8.-9.). You made your first chain!
Make again yarn over and draw working yarn trough the loop (pic.10.-11.). You made your second chain!
Repeat the previous action and make third chain and more until you make 12 chains (pic. 12.).
Single crochet
In the schematic view, single crochet is shown as x (xxxxxxxxxxxx).
Now that we have all the necessary chains it’s time to make single crochet (sc).
Insert the hook in the second chain from the hook (pic. 14.), yarn over (yo)(pic. 15.) and draw working yarn back through the chain (ch). Now you have two loops on the hook. Yarn over (yo)(pic. 16.) and draw working yarn through two loops s on the hook (pic. 17.). And that’s how you make single crochet (sc).
Now make single crochet (sc) in the next chain (ch) and in the next until the end of the row. If you count there will be 11 single crochets (sc) (pic. 18.-22.).
Congrats! You’ve made first row!
Now we need to start second row. Make 1 chain (ch) (pic. 23.) and turn around project (pic. 24.). Insert the hook in the single crochet (sc) from the previous row (pic.25.), yarn over (yo) (pic. 26.), draw working yarn back (pic. 27.), yarn over (yo)(pic. 28.) and draw working yarn through two loops o the hook (pic. 29.).
That’s how you make single crochet (sc) in the second row. Make single crochet in every single crochet from the previous round (pic. 30.- 36.).
To make third row and more just repeat what you already done in the second row (pic. 37.).
Maybe your project won’t look like the one on the picture but don’t worry… Practice makes perfect!
How to make a headband?
Measure your head on position where you wear a headband and make 1-2 cm shorter stripe than you measured (pic.38.). Now cut the yarn 20 cm from the stripe (pic. 39.) and make loop on your hook larger and larger till the loop disappear (pic. 38.-39.). Take the tapestry needle and connect two edges (pic. 40.-44.). When you connect the edges, weave the yarn in the headband (pic. 45.).
Congrats! You’ve just made your first headband! (pic. 46.)
Hope you had fun and if you have friend who would like to learn how to crochet, please share this post.
Till the next time make at least one more headband.
