HOW TO CROCHET A CATERPILLAR TOY

Hello dear crocheter!

I hope that you and your crochet hook are much closer than you were first day and that you’re ready for a new challenge. In this post you will see how to crochet a caterpillar toy which is great for little baby hands and growing teeth.

All you need for this project is cotton yarn, 2,5 mm hook, 3 wooden rings – 5.5cm diameter, needle with blunt top and scissors.

I use this cotton yarn http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/unitas-mirabela , if you can’t buy
this yarn in your store, you probably can find similar yarn http://yarnsub.com/yarns/unitas/mirabela .

If you read my previous posts, you already know to make slip knot, chains, single crochet and slip stitch ( How to make a slip knot, chains and single crochet?), and today I’ll show you how to make half double crochet – hdc. Half double crochet is shown on diagram as “T”.

So if you are ready lets dive in!

FIRST PART

Start – Make slip knot and insert the hook into the ring and draw working yarn through the ring, yarn over and pull working yarn through the loop. (pic. 1. – 4.)

Make 1 ch and again put your hook into the ring, yarn over and pull the hook back through the ring, yarn over and pull it through the loops. Repeat till you have 78 sc and finish with slst in the ch 1 from the beginning. (pic. 5.- 12.)

Do this on the all three wooden ring but with different yarn color and weave in yarn.
( pic. 13. – 15.)

SECOND PART

Take one finished ring and insert the hook in stitch, put the green yarn around the hook and pull back the hook. Make 2 ch, yo and insert the hook in the next stitch, yo, pull back the hook. Now you have 3 loops on the hook. Yo and draw working yarn through all three loops. And that’s how you make half double crochet! Continue with making 64 hdc in the 64 sc from previous row. (pic. 16. – 23.)

Take the second ring and connect it with first ring – yo and insert the hook in stitch on yellow ring, yo and draw working yarn through all three loops. Continue with making 26 hdc more on yellow ring. (pic. 24. – 29.)

Now use the third ring – yo and insert the hook in stitch on pink ring, yo and draw working yarn through all three loops. Make 65 hdc more on pink ring. Now you need to connect rings on the other side. Skip 12 sc on yellow ring and make hdc in 13th stitch. Make 26 hdc more in the yellow ring and connect it with third ring by making slst in the second ch from the beginning of the row. (pic. 30. – 35.)

All three rings are connected (pic. 36.)

THIRD PART

Take green yarn, make slip knot, make 20 ch and connect it with the ring which you would like to be the caterpillar’s head. Insert the hook in 8th hdc from the previous round, and make sc. Now make another 9 sc in the 9 hdc from previous round and make 21 ch. (pic. 37. – 42.)

Then make another 21 ch and make sc in the second ch from the hook. Make another 19 sc. Continue with 10 slst (insert the hook in the stitch, yo, draw working yarn through stitch and the loop on the hook – slip stitch) in the 10 sc from previous row, and then make 20 sc in the 20 ch. When you finish make the knot on the edges. (pic. 43.- 51.)

FOURTH PART

Make 15 ch and connect to the ring with making 5sc in 5 sc from previous row on the position for legs and continue with another 15 ch. (pic. 52.-55.)

When you finish make knote on the edges. Repeat on the other two rings. (pic.56.-58.)

Hope you enjoyed making this cute baby toy which I called the caterpillar Mimi 🙂
